Beautifying Beverages

Clear smooth skin, a slimmer figure, and fewer wrinkles – just a few of the benefits of upgrading your daily beverages.  Americans are very conscious about the food that they eat – as a nation we are diet crazy!  How much thought do you put into the beverages that you drink?  I’m not talking about diet or non-diet soda – it’s about re-thinking soda all together.

Most importantly – drink pure clean water.  Hydrated skin is beautiful, smooth and healthy.  The quality of the water that you drink is also important.  If you don’t already own one, invest in a water filter.  A good quality filter will eliminate chlorine from the water which ages the body and the skin. Other benefits of drinking pure water include a healthier digestive tract and better absorption of nutrients.

Drink more teas – there are many flavorful teas you can try to satisfy your taste buds.  The more tea you drink, the more beautiful your skin.  Tea has proven antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits which is great for your body.  Try different types of teas, drink them hot or cold.  I’m not talking about Snapple or Arizona Iced Tea. The best way to assure that you are drinking high quality tea without added artificial sweeteners is to brew your own from organic tea bags or loose tea.  Some great brands to try are Tazo, Yogi, or Traditional Medicinals.  Be creative and make your own iced teas – combine some different types to create a new flavor.  Green tea is very high in anti-oxidants; also herbal teas have a lot of different flavors you can try.  Sweeten your homemade brew with natural low-glycemic sweeteners like agave nectar or stevia extract which can be found in a health food store.

Experiment with vegetable juices.  Before you turn your nose up at this suggestion, take into consideration the beautifying benefits.  Fresh juices filled with chlorophyll from leafy greens (such as kale, broccoli, parsley, ect.) and fruits (such as apples or pears to sweeten) are great ways to maintain a beautiful body.  Juicing quickens the digestive process and delivers the nutrients into the bloodstream faster.  Vegetable juices detoxify the body and carry pollutants out of the bloodstream which perks up the body and revitalizes the skin.  Studies have shown that Vitamin K in dark leafy greens influence the calcium absorption in our bones – another reason to drink vegetables juices. Use organic vegetables when you can to avoid ingesting pesticides.  Experiment with different combinations of veggies and fruits – try using more veggies then fruit to get more nutrient-dense juices with the most beautifying benefits.  Vegetable juices can be made in a traditional blender if you already have one – other great options are a Vita-mix or the Champion Juicer.

Reduce or eliminate sugary and caffeinated drinks. Sugary drinks like soda, fruit juices with added sugar, sweetened ice tea products, and sports drinks are anti-beautifying.  They contain refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup which drain the body of its stored minerals and nutrients in the skin and all other organs.  This causes a vitamin and mineral deficiency and cravings for more sugar and – resulting in weight gain, acne, puffiness, wrinkles, and overall accelerated aging.  Caffeinated beverages like coffee and soda cause the release of stress hormones in the body.  This results in a blood sugar drop causing sugar cravings; the other is increase fatigue over time that is caused by exhaustion of the adrenal glands. Caffeine also disrupts our sleep – not getting the proper 8 hours of sleep per night will accelerate aging and cause immunity problems.

Consider giving up milk.  The Harvard Nurse’s Health Study published in the American Journal of Public Health showed no decrease in osteoporosis and an increase in bone brittleness in women who drank three glasses of milk a day over those who drank none.  In fact, the countries that have the highest consumption of cow’s milk (US, Finland, Canada) also have the highest rates of osteoporosis. If drinking milk is not helping our bones, what’s the point of drinking it?  Most people are sensitive to dairy and it can cause sinus infections, colds, allergies, acne, and increases chemical pesticides in our system – likely to cause accelerated aging.  There are many alternatives to cow’s milk like unsweetened soy milk, almond milk, or rice milk.  All are very satisfying and delicious – without the negative affects.

Keep alcohol consumption to one drink per day.  Actually, drinking one alcoholic beverage per day has been proven to be good for you.  Upgrading your drink to an organic red wine is a smart idea.  Red wine contains high levels of anti-oxidants – which are great for you body.

Set yourself up for success.  Create a daily and weekly routine that makes it easy to make the right choices.

  • Get a water filter and keep it filled at all times so you have clean pure water available to you.  Also, buy a metal water bottle like the ones by Sigg and keep it with you at all times.
  • Brew a large pot of tea at the beginning of the week and keep it in the fridge ready to drink when you want it.
  • Buy fresh greens at the market in the beginning of the week so you can throw them in the blender for a fresh veggie juice with your breakfast in the morning.

As you add these things into your daily and weekly routine you will find it easier to say goodbye the anti-beautifying beverages of your past.
