Phoenix police involved in shooting
Phoenix police fatally shot a homicide suspect after he fired at officers on Interstate 10 on Friday, authorities said, backing up traffic for miles.
Police identified the deceased suspect as 36-year-old Gemaro Mercado who was originally from Tijuana Mexico.
Earlier, police were called to the 200 block of a South 86 th Drive, where the boyfriend of a Mercado’s sister was shot and killed after a domestic argument, said Detective Luis Samudio, a police spokesman. The victim was identified as a 34-year-old Jose Mancilla.
Witnesses told officers that the assailant fled in a car, believed to be a Ford Mustang. Police found the car on eastbound I-10 near 59th Avenue. Police later recovered the vehicle at a Mohlund drive just about 8 miles from the initial location of the incident.
Samudio said Mercado pulled to the shoulder, got out of the car and began to shoot at officers. He said officers fired back, killing Mercado.
No officers were hurt, Samudio said. No further information was released at this time
The investigation closed eastbound lanes between 59th and 43rd avenues for about six hours. I-10′s eastbound traffic was backed up to Loop 101 in the West Valley, and westbound traffic began to slow in downtown Phoenix, according to images from the Arizona Department of Transportation.
College student April Hudza said she saw the Ford Mustang stop on the side of the road.
Hudza said she couldn’t see what the driver was doing but watched as officers drew their weapons. She said she heard at least one gunshot.
